PAT testing - what, when and why?
PAT testing (Portable
Appliance Testing) is necessary to test electrical appliances and
devices for their safe use. The purpose of these tests is to prevent electrical
accidents in the workplace that could lead to fires and other hazards. Although
security problems can often be detected visually, it is important that the
instruments are tested on the PAT, as some defects can only be detected by
testing the equipment. A full test checks the device grounding, wire polarity,
and insulation resistance. At the end of the PAT test, the device will be marked
as “passed” or “failed”, which must be recorded.
Simple answer
Frequently Asked Question - What does my business need to
test PAT? Any device that needs to be connected to a generator or a fixed
installation must be tested on a PAT.
7 categories of devices that may require PAT testing:
• Stationary appliances
• IT technology
• Portable equipment
• Mobile appliances
• Stationary appliances
• Cable and chargers
• Hand tools
Technical bit
These electrical appliances can be further assigned to class 1, 2 or 3
appliances.
Class 1 devices: this type of device is the
most dangerous because it has only basic insulation, so rely on the ground for
protection.
Class 2 appliances: This type of appliance has
greater insulation, making it safer because it does not rest on the ground.
Class 3 devices: These are the safest devices
since they have a low voltage, however, their chargers and wires must pass the
PAT test.
For example, a cordless power tool should not be tested for
PAT, as it does not connect directly to an electrical outlet. However, the
charger that it uses to charge the device’s battery should be checked.
Similarly, some larger appliances, such as dishwashers, may need PAT testing if
they are connected to a power source.
Your responsibilities
There are no established rules regarding how often a device
should pass PAT testing. However, enterprises are legally responsible for the
safe maintenance of all electrical equipment to ensure the safety of their
employees. London Property Inspectorates can check all of your electrical
appliances to ensure they comply with the 1989 Electricity Law and you are
confident that your facilities are safe to use. At the London
Property Inspections, we recommend that all electrical appliances be
inspected annually to maintain the highest standard of safety.
